Happy New Year January 9, 2010
Eric Orr, Sax Arts and Crafts Representative
At our January meeting, Eric Orr guided teachers in a clay architecture lesson. A variety of wood blocks and rods were wrapped in newspaper and organized to suggest a building. Guides were used to roll clay into 3/8 inch slabs. Multiple textures were applied to the surface of the slabs with rollers, stamps, and found objects. After the decorative effects were added, participants embellished the architectural structres with building features like windows, doors, roofs, and whimsical additions. The wooden armature was removed prior to the clay becoming leather hard.
Eric Orr can be contacted at eric.orr@schoolspecialty.com
The next AENCT meeting is April 24, 2010 at TCU, 9:30am.

Encaustic Painting with Deanna Wood: The encaustic technique involves melting beeswax and Damar crystals (a natural resin) to create a wax medium. The medium can be tinted with oil paint. I brush multiple layers of hot wax medium onto my surface (wood, paper, or raw canvas) and use a heat gun to fuse the wax layers to each other and to the surface. I then often scratch into or scrape away areas of wax, applying oil pastel or oil paint. The wax adds texture, color, and an interesting play of transparency and opacity.
Deanna Wood will demonstrate the encaustic wax painting technique. Participants will get a chance to experiment with the materials and create a small piece of their own.
Limited to the First 25 Art Educators who RSVP
